White-Knuckle Sobriety

White-knuckle sobriety uses the sheer will-power method.

"The addict sits in a chair and grips the arm rests as tightly as possible until the knuckles turn white, all the time resisting the cravings."

It is short term effective for some folks but requires extreme hyper-vigilance 24/7.

It doesn't remove the craving which is the only way to permanent sobriety but not 100% guaranteed.

The white-knuckle alcoholic is worn down from holding on so tight.

  • The cravings never go away.
  • The method drains strength and resolve from even the strongest.
  • Nothing else can be accomplished while gripping the arm rests, saying over and over, "I must stay sober, I must stay sober."
